Frequently Asked Questions
1. Where can I complete a school application?
Applications are available at the Student Assignment Office located at 4204 Okeechobee Road, Fort Pierce, FL 34947, at any school or downloaded at www.stlucie.k12.fl.us.
2. Which school can my child attend?
St. Lucie County School District is divided into three regional school zones - Green, Red, and Blue. Midway Road and the Florida Turnpike are used as dividing lines to create our regional zones. The Green is any area north of Midway Road in Fort Pierce. The Red Zone is the area south of Midway Road and west of the Florida Turnpike. The Blue Zone is the area located east of the Florida’s Turnpike and south of Midway Road. The school zone lines were reviewed and updated in 2006. In each school zone there is several elementary, middle and high schools your child is eligible to attend. They are assigned a school within the zone depending on seat availability. The list for each zone is posted on our website.
3. Am I guaranteed a school that is close to my home?
No. The assignment process allows for preference to be given to families who live within two miles of a school. However, the process does not guarantee families a specific school. Since the applications are processed in a batch (randomly assigned), parents do not need to stand in lines or camp out during registration periods. It is not first apply, first assigned process. Students will be assigned a school within the regional zone in which the child resides.
4. Are students allowed to attend a school in a different school zone?
Students are required to attend schools within their regional school zone. However, there are exceptions: 1) High School students who were grandfathered under the old school zones. 2) High School students attending countywide attractor programs at Fort Pierce Central and Fort Pierce Westwood. 3) Ninth grade High School students who live north of Prima Vista Blvd and St. Lucie West Blvd attending Fort Pierce Central. 4) Middle School students attending the
attractor program at Forest Grove. 5) Students assigned through the AYP process. 6) Elementary students who reside in the blue zone and live within two miles of White City Elementary, Weatherbee Elementary and Bayshore Elementary. Parents may call the Student Assignment Office at 429-3930 with any questions.
5. I live less then 2 miles from a school, but it is not in my regional zone, will my child be able to apply to go to that school?
If you live less than 2 miles from Bayshore, Weatherbee and White City Elementary you will have an opportunity to complete a Limited Zone-to-Zone transfer request which are available at the Student Assignment office.
6. If I only want a specific school what should I do?
If your child is currently enrolled in a school within your school zone, but would like a seat in a school located closer to your home, or a seat in another school, you may place your child on a wait list for the school of your choice. Your child will not lose his/her current placement, but will have an opportunity to change schools through the wait list process.
7. Will transportation be provided for students attending school out-of-zone?
Yes. Transportation will be provided to those students were approved to attend an attractor program.
8. How will the changes affect the magnet schools?
Magnet school waitlists will not be affected. If your child is currently on a waitlist for a magnet school he/she will be able to remain on that list.
9. I have accepted a seat at a magnet school; can I complete an application for a school in my regional zone?
Yes, you may participate in one of the application periods. Once you receive your assignment notification, you must contact the Student Assignment Office or the Magnet School within 5 days of your intentions of releasing or accepting the magnet school seat. If a response is not received, we will release your magnet school seat and offer it to the next student on the list.
10. When will I be notified of my child’s new school assignment?
School assignment postcards for high school students will be mailed by the end of March. School assignment postcards for elementary and middle school students who participated in the first application period will be mailed by the end of April. Postcards for elementary and middle school students who participated in the second application period will be mailed by the end of May.
11. What if I do not get the school of my choice?
If you do not get your first or second choice, your child will automatically be placed on a wait list for your first choice school. If your child is assigned to your second choice school, you will need to complete a wait list application and submit it to the Student Assignment Office.
12. When does the wait list move?
The wait list is moved during the batch process and after the first ten days of school. Children are moved off the list based on seat availability for their grade level.
